Another assignment for faithful crabwalk.com readers! As part of the newspaper’s continuing youth push, I’ll be writing occasionally for the Texas Living section. My first assignment is for a new occasional column called “Cheap Date,” in which Your Hero goes out on a date somewhere in the Metroplex and spends less than $30. Creativity is encouraged.

If anyone has a great idea on how to have a night on the town for two on three sawbucks, please let me know. I need inspiration. (By the way, evidently one quick path to a cheap date — she pays — won’t work here. We’re talking $30 total expenditure. I guess that means The Mansion’s out.)

$30?? Wow, you ARE cheap. ;)

Only teasing, how about a couple of games of PuttPutt? I love putt putt!

Hmn...or a cheap bottle of wine and a picnic at the Shakespeare festival in Dallas, it's free, I think.

And there is also Music in the Atrium on Thursday evenings at the DMA. I think that is free as well.

or roller skating. man, any guy who would go roller skating on a date would fall in the category of a winner for sure.

You all could smoke up some . . .no, wait, that's illegal.
How about having her over and cooking for her? It's a lot cheaper, and women love that (and you could play up the whole Cajun thing.) Plus, there is the added advantage that she's already in your apartment - um...skip that last bit in the "Texas Living" section . . .
Really, all you need is to go by Eatzi's and pick up some picnic things . . .maybe some nice Tuscan salami or something, some bread, cheeses, a veggie sald or something, cookies . . .wine is out with your budget, but you could get some nice water or bottled lemonade. Then just head a couple of blocks over to Lakeside Park on Turtle creeks. Lay out a blanket, talk, read her some of your favorite poems, and then have her read you some of hers. Then you all could walk off your meal along the trail as you hold hands and feed the ducks.
Not really a "night" out, but that's all you need.

take her to the 7-11 and buy 30 scratch off lottery tickets. with any luck the date might continue at the masion on turtle creek.

I lived in Dallas for a while and miss it dearly. Here's some cheap junk mi amour and I used to like to do:

* Up in Allen, there's this neat nature conservancy called Connemara that used to, in spring, I think, host these outdoor interactive sculptures. Always a lot of fun and the admission was free.

Can't find any web links, but this page has directions: http://www.dallasartsrevue.com/resources/Mu+Centers.shtml

* I'm pretty sure two people can eat at Queen of Sheeba for less than $30. Great Ethipoian food that you eat with your hands, mopping up the food with this yummy flatbread. (Info on the restaurant here: http://www.utdallas.edu/~eden/queen_of_sheba.html )

* Nickel Ranch is ass-kickingly good fun...old pinballs and arcade games that are only a nickel per play (1904 Abrams Pkwy. (214) 874-0555).

* We also liked some of the touristy stuff like the Arboretum (especially the easter egg hunt) and the planetarium (which only cost like $3 to get in if I remember right)

* Also...what's that big building with the funky arch-like top near the DMA? Trammel Crow? Whatever it is, you can, like, go to the top of it for free and get a great view of the city. Just ask the folks at the security booth as you enter.

Hope some of those were helpful.

Stomp her in a game of Trivial Pursuit. That should be pretty cheap.

Dude, No-Holds-Barred Scrabble!

Each person has to use all 7 letters on each turn and invent a story to justify the letter or phrase. My favorite from our last game:

i nit u a yi.

This is probably something for a double date, though. The turnaround would be too fast if there were just two of you.
