Animal-loving types have to be told to stop flooding FEMA offices with phone calls because “the barrage of phone calls is now hampering [Gen. Honore’s] humanitarian missions, rather than helping.” Some folks on this site have apparently been posting Gen. Honore’s phone number and telling people to call it repeatedly so they can tell him…I don’t know what, really. “Worry about the puppies”?
As I said: I like animals too, but I’d like to think I know better than to flood an already-stressed emergency-management system with “save the kitties” calls. This isn’t your congressman before a vote — this is a disaster area. Priorities, people.

Being a "dog person," I prepared - and almost sent - an email to a dozen other "dog people"...even a few "cat people". It was the night after Hurricane Katrina hit, and something told me to shelve my message, and wait to see what would happen to the humans.
The abandoned message provided a link to the US Humane Society which runs a massive rescue effort in the case of disasters. Sadly, it became apparent that saving humans would prove difficult enough. As much as I think dogs are really swell. It just didn't seem appropriate to send a message that might draw attention and resources away from the endless troubles facing the two-legged tribe.
If some pets were lost, it's regrettable...and people badgering FEMA about pets and animals is totally whacked. A little perspective goes a long way.
