For the last few years, my cell phone has displayed the word CINGULAR on its face to indicate what network it’s on.

For the last few days, that’s changed to ‘CINGULAR’ — in single quotation marks.

My phone has become ironic.

Actually, the cell tower has become ironic. The tower sends an ident that tells the phone which networks are available. So the tower is mocking its master.
