march 2002 - the mixed-up mix
If you're here, you must have a copy of my March mix. Please leave your comment on the mix -- what you liked, what you didn't -- at the bottom of the page.
1. A Stroke of Genius (The Strokes vs. Christina Aguilera) / The Freelance Hellraiser. The first of five tracks here taken from the current British bootleg craze, which through the magic of Macintosh technology merges two popular tracks into a seamless whole. The pattern matching on this track is so good it sounds like an original composition.
2. New York City Cops / The Strokes. Originally intended for the Strokes' debut CD, Is This It, but understandably removed from the U.S. release after 9/11.
3. I Wanna Dance With Numbers (Kraftwerk vs. Whitney Houston) / Girls on Top. This is my favorite bootleg mix; the spare beats make Whitney sound so alone.
4. Young Lawyer / The French Kicks. Sort of a Strokes brother band from Brooklyn. Very influenced by mid-90s band Jonathan Fireeater.
5. Inner City Blues / Marvin Gaye. The great one.
6. Take Me Back to Tulsa / The Red Stick Ramblers. "Authentic Cajun gypsy swing," as the mandolin player (a high school classmate of mine) puts it.
7. Talkin Alien Abduction Blues / Dan Bern. Would make a fine Dylan impersonator in Vegas, if the market demanded such a thing.
8. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning / Johnny Hartman. An overlooked jazz vocalist.
9. Strange Loop / Liz Phair. I was madly in love with Liz Phair for about two years, and she with me. Except the second part.
10. Hanging Around / The Cardigans. Ditto the Cardigans' Nina Persson.
11. Rainy Streets / Superchunk. Rockin' Chapel Hill to its knees since 1931.
12. Smells Like Missy Elliott (Nirvana vs. Missy Elliott) / Conway. Another mix. It seems everyone is mixing Missy these days.
13. Black Steel / Tricky. A dissonant cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos."
14. Bootleg (Squarepusher vs. Christina Aguilera) / Matt Tuozzo. Yes, two Christinas on one mix -- never thought I could say that. And it's not tremendously well done, but I dig Squarepusher.
15. A Head With Wings / Morphine. Low rock from the late Mark Sandman.
16. Who You Talkin To? / Sloan. Probably the best song off of 2001's Pretty Together.
17. Anything You Want / Spoon. Love this song, love this album.
18. Rue St. Vincent / Yves Montand. From the impeccable Rushmore soundtrack.
19. Musical Know How (Young MC vs. Madonna) / The Freelance Hellraiser. The Hellraiser is clearly the king of the genre.
